I’ve been waiting for a Great Pumpkin and he never seems to show up

The Mindy Project returned this week after a two-week hiatus, and it seemed that Mindy Kaling needed the break to rest up in preparation for carrying this episode. Despite refusing to don the “Linus” costume for a Halloween party, Mindy finds herself in a real life version of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” It takes a 1st grader to bring it to her attention that much like Linus she is waiting around for someone that may never show up. Welcome to Woodbury

with one comment

Hi all,

What a shame that the  surprise reveal of Merle was given away during the “previously on” – but the Governor’s arrival so overshadowed everything else that I can’t complain! I don’t know about you guys, but to me it was a relief to get into some new stories! Funnily enough, before we even reached the linguistic battles mid-episode, I was already taking notes to write this post on docile bodies – between the last two weeks being set in the prison, the zombie pack-mules, and Woodbury’s rigid forms of lockdown, we have a season shaping up that is ripe for some Foucauldian interpretation. Withstanding the Pull of the Tide

Hi friends,

Well after our conversations of the last few weeks, I’m intrigued to hear your thoughts on Hannah now. Will she be replacing Isaac as the central bad-guy this season? Will we be conflating the love/sex interest with the bad guy (something like Lila, but with a less annoying way of talking) so that the killing gets all hot? Just what kind of a showdown is going to brew between the women in Dexter’s life? I think the most interesting possibilities lie here, in fact. Right now Deb is trying to extricate herself from playing backseat to Dexter’s dark passenger. But the tone of the hotel room scene seemed to keep the sibling sexuality in sight this week (“you kept your eyes on me all day”), which leaves me wondering if Deb is going to get jealous of this new interest of desire for Dexter. When we pair that with her growing frustrations about those who ‘fall through the cracks,’ I wonder if Dexter is going to close in on a kill that will show Deb the complexity of wanting someone dead. They’re setting up a narrative in which even the kinds of evidence Dexter has now promised to bring to Deb would be worthless because of Hannah’s immunity (how brazen of her in that conversation, btw!). But if he ends up pulling the trigger, and if Deb supports him in doing so, I’m left wondering just how complex her own motivations will be…and how she’ll deal with that complexity! Halloween Surprise

with 6 comments

Daniel,

So about half way through the episode, I thought to myself about the title of the episode (Halloween Surprise), and I wondered what the surprise was going to be. Jerry’s fart attack (which, for me, Leslie calling it a fart attack in a completely normal tone at a fundraising event encapsulates what I love about this show in it’s sincere absurdity) Read the rest of this entry »

One of the Five?

Dear Kathryn,

Well, I suppose the big mystery of the evening is: who are these 5? And why does the hunter not even know he’s one of them? It looks like next week is going to have some historical flashbacks – so perhaps we’ll see an origin story that connects these hunters to the creation of the originals? Aren’t there 5 originals? Is there a hunter for each original? Lots of questions, but not a whole lot of answers. In fact, despite the explosions and revelations, it seems this episode was really all about a big relationship shuffle with a little filler. Read the rest of this entry »

I met Sam Merlotte!

Dear MothChase friends,

I can’t resist posting on this, even though it’s not technically tv procrastanalysis! I was super bummed to have to roll out of bed this Sunday morning early for an early morning flight – but then in line at the airport I saw this guy who looked a whole lot like Sam Trammell from True Blood. After a little staring, a few accidental moments of awkward eye contact, and one much-too-loud exclamation of “yeah, that’s definitely Sam!” to my husband, Tyler, Read the rest of this entry »

Everything is in my control

Kathryn and Natalie,

So, this episode seems to be stretching out a little bit and setting up the stage for all the major storylines of the season (which makes sense as we are now finishing the first third of this season). We are getting deeper with Isaac and the Russians (who seem to prefer speaking English to each other for some reason). We have Hannah show up at Dexter’s lab (FYI: the connection of Dexter’s Laboratory and Dexter has finally been created on the internet). This is one of the moments that feels like the show really stretching just to get its pieces in place for future episodes. I’m not sure I buy into Hannah’s motivations to go talk to Dexter. Speaking of moving pieces, let’s just get Harrison out of here for “a few weeks.” Read the rest of this entry »
