The curse of the sun and the moon
Dear Moth Chase Readers,
My night and morning were totally swamped and I am only just now sitting down to watch Vampire Diaries. Since I don’t have a lot of time, I am going to try my hand at blow-by-blow blogging instead of a post-show summary. Natalie is out of town, but we will pick up our normal format next week.
Alaric! I didn’t realize that I missed him, but it is so fun to see the whole team is back together again! Damon asks the question we all want to know: if he has been alive for 160+ years he should at least have come across one werewolf in his time if they exist. In the meantime, very buff Lockwood men are running around the woods in tank tops. Suspicious stairs in the woods: what is up with all these underground ruins in Mystic Falls? Is this a holding den for when the werewolves change? Are those claw scratches in the stone? Damon compares himself to Bela Lugosi and Mason to Lon Chaney. Lon Chaney was the original Wolf Man and the werewolf who bit him and whom he killed was played by Bela Lugosi, who was the iconic Hollywood vampire. Nice movie mash-up!
Carolyn trapped in her house of pain. So hard to be a creature of the night and a lovesick teenager!
Damon and Elena being too adult and a bit too boring. Fun road trip possibilities – Damon, Alaric, and Elena headed to Duke!
Mrs. Lockwood writes off the freaky underground cellar as old slave quarters, which, let’s be honest, are a lot scarier and more horrific than some secret werewolf den. Still, it is unusual that the show would address its southern location and the racial politics that might be present when they play race like it is just a cosmetic choice, throwing a few hot black girls into the white guys fantasies, and killing off the only black men we’ve seen so far (the vampire last season and Caroline’s fairground meal last week).
I like Bonnie playing hard ball with Caroline. She isn’t going to get over her prejudice just because Caroline is her best friend. Why does she trust Stefan so much if she hates all vampires?
Anthropology grad students sure are hot at Duke (and how fun to see Christine from last season of Dexter). And look at those offices. Was Isobel even tenured? Ah-ha, hot grad student is a vampire hunter!
I really like this maker/child relationship with Stefan and Caroline. We learn more vampire lore. Apparently becoming a vampire amplifies your human characteristics. We learn that Stefan was super sensitive and caring and empathetic as a human, which explains why he is such a tormented whiner now. Does anyone actually talk that way about themselves? Caroline’s speech was so perfect in comparison: “so I’m an insecure, neurotic control freak on crack?” and later “My entire personality is killing me.”
If we believe hot grad student, vampires and werewolves are the product of an Aztec shaman who curses vampires to be slaves to the sun and werewolves servants of the moon. Werewolves hunt vampires as a prey of choice. There are very few werewolves alive because vampires hunted them to near extinction, which is why Damon hasn’t heard of them. Then again, werewolf bites are fatal to Caroline. Cue the scene with Stefan and Caroline and a full moon.
Matt doesn’t want any more drama – how much longer until he learns what he is really dealing with? Will tonight be the night he gets in on the secret?
Yes, the secret cellar is indeed a werewolf den. Courteous uncle Mason makes a mad dash for the forest so as not to transform near humans but he doesn’t have time to chain himself up. Why does Stefan seem so slow? If he has super hearing, why can’t he hear what Mason is up to in the car? Why doesn’t he see the chains before he stumbles over them? Why does he look so startled and confused after Mason busts out and runs away? Why did Mason run away?
Yep, tonight is the night for Matt’s big initiation. And maybe Tyler’s too! It seems like he knows who the wolf is. Oh, wait, I guess Matt won’t remember anything thanks to Caroline’s compulsion. But it looks like Tyler will. I wonder how the werewolf curse is activated. How many more full moons without chains are in his future?
Do you think that Matt subconsciously remembers the bite and that is why he loses his patience with Caroline? It would be sort of cool if compulsion left traces in the subconscious. Speaking of which, how long does compulsion last? Why does Amy suddenly feel free to start chatting up Matt again?
Damon shows a rare moment of vulnerability and seems genuine when he apologizes to Elena. I know killing her brother is a lot to get over, but do you think Elena really was uncharacteristically bitchy? It does make one wonder more about how the doppelganger hijinks will unfold.
And speak of the devil! Katherine! Oh lord, what will happen to Mystic Falls if she actually turns Caroline to the dark vampire side? Something tells me she will know just how to activate Caroline’s insecurities to the detriment of anyone who crosses her path.
I can’t wait for next week: a show down between Katherine and Elena at last!
